My name is Brittney and I was born "crunchy". As a natural birthed, extended breastfed, cloth diapered, minimally vaccinated, delayed solids, vegetarian, attachement parented, now mommy of 3 who slept with her own mommy until she was 6, I got the name for my business because I didn't become "crunchy", I was born that way.... I tried to fight it, to become mainstream like all the other people I knew after we moved away from our little hippie town in northern CA, but I could only fight it for so long. When I had my own children I realized that I wanted to parent the way my own mom did, cuz quite frankly, I think she did a pretty awesome job.... Ya know, cuz I'm pretty awesome.
The advice she gave me was different from my friends moms who were telling them to not only formula feed INSTEAD of breastfeeding (say WHAT?!?) but also telling them to give cereal in bottles at 4 weeks, buy XYZ diaper because "they are so absorbent you don't have to change them as often" O.o. So um yeah, my moms advice was really just affirming what felt natural to me. Sleep with your baby, you will be well rested and it will help your milk supply. Wear your baby, it will make you both more comfortable. Don't feed him that mush, I gave you chunks of soft food when you started showing an interest in food. Use cloth diapers, they are better for the environment, your wallet, and your baby. Breastfeed as long as you can, your baby will know when he no longer needs breast milk.
Granted, I didn't fully take her advice on some of those things until the 2nd (extended breastfeeding, cloth diapering) and 3rd babies (delayed solids), but I love that my "crunchy" roots are showing through now. And now my own kids are also born crunchy. Hence the name :)
Now I started knitting about 5 years ago, making cute hats and misc gifts for friends, but when I entered the world of Cloth Diapering, I discovered wool diaper covers. Not only are they an amazing thing because they are environmentally friendlier than PUL (polyurethane laminate) diaper covers, because wool is renewable, but they are oh so soft, squishy and so flippin adorable! And because beautifully hand painted yarns were a bit out of my price range I started dyeing my own.... And then of course I wanted cute little tshirts to match, but with 3 small children and a one income household, I wasn't exactly in the position to buy them, so I started making my own....
And now to fund my adorably squishy habit of beautiful wool and cute tshirts, along with helping to keep me home with my precious boys, I have decided to branch out and sell my handmade goodies and spread the love of squishy, beautiful wool and super cute matching shirts to the Cloth Diapering world and beyond!
This blog will post tons of stuff, but at this moment, most likely just previews of things to come.... I will be guest stocking at Shizz.Knitz grand opening on October 1st, and will also be a part of the brand new Congo, Sweet November, opening November 1st, both on Hyena Cart. I plan to have my own grand opening sometime in the next 4 months, hopefully sooner rather than later.... Thanks for stopping by!
